THE READING DR.

Parent Toolkit

Everything you need to get your child reading — in your language. Your child reads in English; you don't need English to help.

Get your child started

  • Add your child's name and grade — this picks the right starting point for their free reading check.
  • Let your child choose an avatar. It makes practice feel like their own space.
  • The free reading check takes about 15 minutes. A quiet time works best.
  • You don't need to help with answers. Just sit nearby and let them try.

Encourage without English

  • Praise effort, not perfection: "I love how you kept trying!"
  • Ask about the story in your language: "What happened in your story today?"
  • Celebrate every star: "You earned a star today — show me!"
  • Your encouragement matters more than your English. A smile and a thumbs-up go a long way.

Practice at home

  • 15 minutes a day is enough. Little and often beats long and rare.
  • After a story, ask your child to tell it back in your language. Retelling builds understanding.
  • Read anything together: labels, signs, messages from family. Reading is everywhere.
  • Same time each day builds the habit — after dinner or before bed works well.

Understand progress

  • Stars show effort, not grades. More stars means more practice, not "smarter".
  • Level bands show where your child is reading now. They move up as gaps close.
  • The dashboard shows what to do next — you don't need to decide.
  • Talk about progress simply: "You're reading harder words than last month!"
